11 dead, 63 rescued after boat sinks in northern Brazil


SAO PAULO – A passenger boat operating without proper permits sank Thursday in an Atlantic Ocean bay in the northern Brazilian state of Para, killing at least 11 people, authorities said.

A state government statement said 63 people were rescued from the water after the boat crashed near Cotijuba Island, which is close to the city of Belem. It said nine of the dead were women.
