KARACHI: The Pakistan tennis team hopes to make history when it takes on a higher-ranked Austria in the Davis Cup World Group I game on Friday in Tulin, Austria.
The Pakistani team consists of Mohammad Shoaib and Muzammil Murtaza along with the experienced duo Aisam ul Haq Qureshi and Aisam Qureshi.
The draws for the draw were completed on Thursday and according to the draws, Shoaib and Muzammil will play the singles, while Aisam and Aqeel Khan will form a duo for the doubles.
Twenty-year old Shoaib opened the tie on Friday with the first basehit against Jurij Rodionov on the 137, followed by singles between Muzammil and Filip Misolic.
On Saturday, the 2nd day of the tie, Aisam and Aqeel will take the field for their doubles against Alexender Erler and Lucas Miedler.
In reverse singles, Muzammil takes on Rodionov, while Shoaib takes on Misolic.
Prior to the draw, Pakistani team captain and veteran player Aisam said: Geo that team hopes to make history.
“We have prepared well for this draw, we have been here for a week now and training twice a day. Our morale is very high because this will be a historic draw,” he said.
“The conditions will be difficult due to the rain, which has slowed down the clay court a bit and that might suit the Austrian team. We will do our very best to give Austria a difficult time and hopefully we can make history too,” said Pakistan’s most successful tennis player.
Aisam added that the draw is also a good opportunity for young players like Muzammil and Shoaib, who will have the chance to play against one of the best clubs in Europe.
